Located in downtown Chicago on Michigan Avenue between Randolph and Monroe streets is Millennium Park, the 24.5 acre park opened in 2004 that has become one of the most significant projects in the world. As a result of a unique partnership with City of Chicago and the philanthropic community, it is a state of the art collection of world class art, music architecture and landscape design and provides hundreds of free cultural programs including concerts, exhibitions, tours and family activities. Notable activities include Grant Park Music Festival and ice skating all against the backdrop of Michigan Avenue and the city skyline. The Lurie Gardens are a 5 acre urban garden where family and adult workshops and guided tours are given. The park hosts over 500 free events each year.
Among the parks most notable features is the Jay Pritzker Pavilion which stands 120 feet high with a “headdress” of stainless steel ribbons that frame the opening connecting to an overhead trellis of crisscrossing steel pipes that define the lawn seating area. The Pavilion has 4000 fixed seats and a capacity for an additional 7,000 people on the lawn. It is one of the most technologically advanced outdoor concert venues in the world.
